Discussion of Armed Forces modernization program continues

The final discussions of the seven-year program for military modernization continued on January 5 at the Monte Melkonian Military School. Representatives of the Ministry of Defence, Armed Forces and General Staff as well as those of legislative and executive bodies, NGO sector and experts attended the discussions.


Armenian Defence Minister Vigen Sargsyan briefed those present on the main directions and key principles of the program. He emphasized that the current technical and technological progress, the acquisition and introduction of new weapons have essentially changed the way combats are conducted, making them swifter and shorter. Taking into account the existing challenges and the need to maintain the balance of forces, all possible scenarios and counteractions were considered when drafting the program. In addition, necessary conditions have been created for effective resource management.

Chief of General Staff Col. Gen. Movses Hakobyan, Deputy Defence Minister David Pakhchanyan delivered reports.

The discussion participants, who praised the work done over the document, made proposals and observations.

On October 24, 2017, while attending the inauguration of the National Research University’s new educational program, President Sargsyan instructed the defense minister to develop a seven-year program for the modernization of the army with a goal to increase the effectiveness of the Armed Forces governance as well as its training and combat readiness levels.
